Administrative Licensure
Tennessee Beginning Administrator License (BAL)
In order to obtain a Beginning Administrator License (BAL), students must successfully complete the required coursework as part of the M.S. or Ed.S. degrees offered by the Educational Administration and Supervision program. This license is granted by the State of Tennessee’s Department of Education upon the recommendation of the University of Tennessee.
In addition to the successful completion of all courses, students are required by the State of Tennessee:
- to pass the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (SLLA) which is based on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards, and
- to have successfully completed eight months of school-related work (e.g., teacher, counselor) (TN Code Annotated, 49-5-101)
Tennessee Professional Administrative License (PAL)
As a service to the graduates of our program, the Educational Administration and Supervision faculty work with beginning administrators during the first three years of their principalship. This work culminates with the school administrator obtaining a Professional Administrative License (PAL). The nature of this work is decided upon in consultation with the beginning administrator and his/her school district supervisor (i.e., superintendent). Examples of this work include: mentoring, additional coursework, and the development of a professional leadership portfolio.
