The Tourism Institute's mission parallels the University of Tennessee's mission of being the leading provider of hospitality and tourism education, research and economic development in the state. The Tourism Institute seeks to fulfill this mission by:

  • Partnering with communities to provide education, research, technical, and cultural support to increase the livability of Tennessee communities, and
  • Partnering with industry and government to improve the quality of the workplace and to serve as an engine for economic and cultural development.

The Institute has developed and maintains an economic database of business trends in Tennessee's hotel, restaurant, and tourism industries through partnerships with public and private sector hospitality and tourism organizations in Tennessee.

The Institute is centered in the Department of Retail, Hospitality and Tourism Management in the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Tennessee - Knoxville.
