Charles L. Thompson is a professor of Counselor Education and Educational Psychology at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science education and educational psychology from The University of Tennessee and his Ph.D. degree in counselor education and developmental and counseling psychology at The Ohio State University – where he held NDEA and Delta Theta Tau fellowships. Charles is a former teacher and counselor in grades 7 to 12. He holds memberships in the American Counseling Association, The American School Counselor Association, The American Mental Health Counselors Association, The Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the American Psychological Association. He is a licensed psychologist and licensed school counselor and is board certified by the National Board of Certified Counselors. His research interests are in counselor education and individual counseling. He has published articles in The Journal of Counseling & Development, The Elementary School Guidance & Counseling Journal, The School Counselor, Counselor Education and Supervision, Professional School Counseling and The Journal of Counseling Psychology, and has co-written five books on counseling. He is the senior author of Counseling Children published in its 6th edition in 2004. This widely used text book is used throughout the world and has been translated into Chinese, Korean, and Norwegian. He also is the senior author of a new book on Classroom Management: A Constructivist Approach which will be published in 2004. He is coauthor of Educational Psychology: For Teachers in Training. Charles was editor of the IDEA Exchange in the Elementary School Guidance & Counseling Journal from 1979 to 1997. Charles received the American Mental Health Counselors Association’s Counselor Educator of the Year Award for 1996 and the Writer of the Year Award from The American School Counselor Association in 2001.
