Dr. Thompson’s current research interests are centered on phenomenological
approaches to go beyond quantitative data. While he still maintains a quantitative
research program on single-participant research in counseling outcomes, he
has come to appreciate the fact that his quantitative research is useful in
finding out what happened, but contributes little to the questions of how and
why something happens. Phenomenological methods have been quite helpful to
him in answering the latter two questions. In addition to supervising several
doctoral dissertations using phenomenological methodology, Dr. Thompson has
participated in five recent studies on the following topics:
Descriptions of university life by successful black undergraduate students;
The experience of grief after bereavement;
Can you go home again? An investigation of returning home after studying abroad
(two separate studies-one with students who returned home and stayed and one
with students who returned home only to return to the country of their sojourn.
Descriptions of university life by undergraduate, black students who were on academic probation after their first semester of college.

Dr. Thompson’s teaching has been at the graduate level; however, he
teaches at least one undergraduate class per year in educational psychology.
He organized a student mentoring program with local schools where university
students go out to the schools and mentor students who need tutoring and counseling
assistance. Many of the student/athletes in men’s and women’s sports
participate in this program. Dr. Thompson, with a former faculty member, organized
a course in how to study and rapid reading to help at-risk college freshman.
