Geographic & Geography Related Data Sources

  • United States Geological Survey (USGS) - An outstanding resource for basic GIS data. Computerized versions of USGS topographic maps, digital raster graphs (DRGs) and digital line graphs (DLGs), can be downloaded at various scales for most sections of the United States.
  • National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) - The NCDC archives climate/weather data for the United States as well as the rest of the globe.

Other Geography Resources

  • Internet Resources for Geographers - A fantastic index maintained by the Department of Geography at the University of Colorado - Boulder.
  • Electronic Resources for Geography - One of the largest and most comprehensive geography sites on the Internet. Contains information of interest to both collegiate and K-12 teachers.
  • Geographic Learning Site (GLS) - A State Department home page dedicated to the teaching geography and foreign affairs to K-12 students.  It demonstrates how geography shapes foreign affairs, and teaches students about the Department of State's work.  The GLS underscores the leadership role of the United States in such global issues as human rights, democracy, sustainable development, and environmental protection. The GLS has four sections:  "Where Do U.S. Diplomats Work?," "Traveling With the Secretary," "Geography in the News," and "Challenging World." Students learn about nearly 200 foreign countries, view a country map with related data, follow the Secretary on a recent trip, see how the world is changing, and then tackle a problem that has been identified as a critical U.S. national interest.
  • Resources For Earth Science and Geography Instruction - The sites selected are based on image quality, ease with which lesson plans can be developed, organization, authenticity, scope, and format. Links are organized around the sequence of topics typically taught in an introductory physical geography or earth science class. Links are also available for environmental science, earth science/geography education, career opportunities, and more.
  • Project Citizen - We the People...Project Citizen is a civic education program for middle school students that promotes competent and responsible participation in state and local government. It actively engages students in learning how to monitor and influence public policy and encourages civic participation among students, their parents, and members of the community. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file.
