Discussion 1: Informational Presentation on the Information Technology University
Task Force
Linda Painter described the mission, goals, scope, and projected outcomes
of the newly formed (August 1999) Information Technology University Task Force.
The group will focus efforts on the integration of technology in teaching,
research, and service.
She noted, as a baseline figure, approximately 5,000 students and 263 faculty
currently have accounts for web-based courses using CourseInfo software. Additionally,
27 physician-students participate in the Internet-based PEMBA program. Research
initiatives involve collaboration with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, while
service projects link with the Internet Education Institute.
The task force will develop a comprehensive information technology plan that
defines policies and procedures for electronic courses and promotes the migration
of academic services to the web. It will also address faculty issues, concerns
for intellectual property, partnerships, and costs of implementation.
Discussion 2: Changes in Software Distribution
Stan Pinkleton announced that distribution of personal-use software and software
licenses previously available to students, faculty, and staff from DII's Aconda
Court location has been moved to the Computer Store in the University Center.
The Aconda Court Service facility will continue to supply software to university
departments.
A member asked if the Command (F-Prot) Anti-Virus software could be upgraded
from the web. Pinkleton and McNeil indicated DII receives notice of upgrades
by e-mail usually on a monthly basis, but at this time individual users cannot
access these updates directly from the web.
Discussion 3: New Presidential Court Student Computing Lab
Jeff Maples reported renovation of the Presidential Court Grill area began
on October 18 with the new computing lab expected to open for the Spring semester
2000. McNeil stated computers would be available for installation at whatever
date the facility was completed. If the shipment of new computers does not
arrive before the opening date, units from the Residence Hall Labs scheduled
to be closed due to the new lab will be used, and then replaced with the new
machines when they do arrive in approximately 2-3 weeks.
Other Business: None
The next meeting will be November 17, 1999, at 2PM in the 4th floor conference
room of Andy Holt Tower.
