Network Access Enhancements
  • Campus infrastructure completed
    • Campus Internet connection upgraded from six T-1 line (1.5mb) connections to a DS-3 (45mb) connection
    • Campus Residence Halls - installed 3200+ ports which completed dorm network access project
    • Other campus buildings
      • Backbone and segment upgrades, building rewiring projects, enhancements, and changes continued in the following buildings: Andy Holt Tower, Agricultural Engineering, Hoskins Library, and Humanities
      • Networking equipment upgrades/additions were installed in Art & Architecture, Humanities, McClung Tower, Morgan Hall, Music, Science and Engineering, and Veterinary Teaching Hospital buildings
      • Total Building Wiring Infrastructure Upgrades: Dougherty, Perkins, and University Center were rewired to provide 10/100 megabit switched network access
      • Selected Area Wiring Projects: completed infrastructure wiring/rewiring of classrooms, computer labs, and academic departments in Humanities
  • Upgraded ATM backbone to support upgrade of dial-up modem pool to 56K modem speeds and v.90 technology
  • Installed/subsidized cost of 2,187 network interface cards for students
  • Continued subsidized remote access
  • Acquired a new Newsgroup Server

Equipment Upgrades in Open and Departmental Computer Labs
  • Continued expanded hours of operation in Open Labs

    The following were equipped with new or upgraded computers: Ag Engineering, Architecture, Audiology, Business Glocker Lab, Business SMC Lab, Education, Freshman Engineering Lab, Nuclear Engineering, Geography, Geology, Law, Psychology, Mathematics, Nursing, Physics, Sociology, Stokley Athletics Lab, Theatre, and University Libraries in Hodges.

Student Support Services and Software Distribution Enhancements
  • Offered computing consulting and Unix password assistance to over 8,000 students
  • Taught 181 training classes, serving over 6,000 students
  • Distributed Computer Based Training (CBT) materials and over 600 Certificates for successful course completion
  • Created and distributed 300 custom CD-ROMs for classes in accounting, business, engineering, etc.
  • Distributed over 8,800 copies of the Life Preserver and Rescue Squad documentation
  • Served 40,450 of the campus community via the Telephone Support Line and an additional 2, 304 via E-mail support
  • Distributed selected academic software such as F-Prot, Microsoft applications, Maple, etc.
  • Provided web-based Resume Expert for student career planning with Career Services
  • Supplied site license software for open labs such as Appleworks and Autodesk
  • Made available for graduate studies statistical analysis software such as the NU*DST applications package

Academic Technology Facility and Instructional Technology Enhancements
  • Enhanced and extended student learning and marketability by providing instructional technology resources, services, and support to more than 1,000 UTK faculty, Graduate Teaching Assistants, and other academic teaching staff.
  • Piloted and launched a course management system (CourseInfo) hosting 263 course accounts and over 3,000 student accounts in the first semester of operation.
  • Managed the ITC Faculty Development Lab and an instructional lending pool.
  • Maintained information rich Websites and resource repositories for the Innovative Technologies Collaborative and CourseInfo support.
  • Offered courses on using CourseInfo, the course management system and communications, multimedia, and Internet skills for teaching and learning.
  • Taught 68 sections of 22 courses with enrollments of 609 and served approximately 130 participants in 10 Lucky Seven Programs, ITC courses customized for individual departments.
  • Upgraded a lecture hall in Geography and Geology and 3 classrooms in Walters Life Sciences with technology.
  • Supported 8 departments with instructional support technology carts
  • Collaborated with other university units to augment instructional venues with technology for the delivery of instruction.
