The Appalachian Regional Commission, the University of Tennessee and Governor Don sunquist present $10,000 each to four East Tennessee school systems with low college-attendance rates.
Systems in Campbell, Fentress, Johnson and Scott counties normally have college attendance rates of 35 percent, compared to a national average of 65 perscent, according to a UT press release.
The awards were presented through the Tennessee Appalachian Higher Education Center, which was established early this year to provide grants, technical assistance, college information and other resources to need school districts.
