The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) opened the Tennessee Appalachian Higher Education (TnACHE) Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the spring of 2002.
The TnACHE will initially serve ARC distressed county high schools that have a low percentage of students going on to post-secondary education. These high schools have an average college-going rate of 35.1 percent, compared to the national a
verage of 65 percent. High schools working with the Ohio and West Virginia centers typically see college-going rates above 70 percent.
Through a grant process, the TnACHE provides technical assistance and information on higher education to the schools and communities to encourage more students to complete high school and continue their educations. The grants enable the high schools to be
gin programs that help students see continuing their educations as both a viable possibility and a necessity for success in life.
The center hopes to expand to additional counties as funding becomes available.
The TnACHE is supported in part by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) in partnership with the W. K. Kellogg Foundation and the University of Tennessee.
