Poet List

Below is a list of poets whose works you may select from for Tuesday's class. Please bring to poems by one of these poets to class. While it might sound like cruel and unusual punishment, I am asking you to read one poem aloud to the class. If your poem is very short--as many children's poems are--please be prepared to read two. It's OK if two students read the same poem. As I said in class, poetry written for children begs to read aloud, and each reader should have a different approach to the same poem. Please practice reading the poem. Be creative--bring props, drawings, music--if you want. Be prepared to have fun, not only reading your selected poem but also by listening to others. Keep in mind that many of the poets on this list wrote "adult" poetry as well as verse for children; please bring poetry you think is aimed at children. In other words, just because T.S. Eliot is on the list doesn't mean that we should be reading "The Wasteland" to 3rd graders. If you have any questions or concerns, let me know.
