SPANISH 150
attempts to develop communicative proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing.  The course combines content language learning with interactive tasks and is designed for students who have had Spanish in high school or some other institution.  Students who have never had Spanish should enroll in Spanish 111.

SPANISH 150 is a review course that will require students to participate in self-motivated learning, consistent computer assisted practices, and independent learning.  The instructors of this course will not take in-class time for memory work.  All memory work should be done outside of class.  In-class time is reserved to USE the foreign language.  All instructors will post office hours so that you may attend them if you need clarification of material.  If you do not have time to complete at least two hours of homework per one hour in class, please consider taking this course when your schedule is not as demanding or select another foreign language, such as Portuguese or Italian.

USE OF SPANISH IN CLASS:  Our instructors are REQUIRED to speak almost entirely in Spanish from the first day of class.  They will use gestures, pictures, cognates, etc. to make themselves comprehensible.  You are not expected to understand every word that the instructor says.  Your comprehension will improve as the class progresses, particularly if you are completing your listening comprehension assignments in the on-line student workbook/lab manual.

COURSE ATTENDANCE POLICY:  Many students have failed to understand the severity of missing classes until it was too late.  The first and second year foreign language courses in the department of Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures have adopted the same attendance policy beginning this year.

Official Policy
Daily attendance in class is required, not optional.  Being in class to practice the language is absolutely vital to your success as a foreign language learner.  You will be allowed a maximum of three absences for sickness, doctor visits, visits to the health center, court appearances, personal business, etc., during the semester without penalty.  Beginning with the fourth absence, a penalty of 1% for each absence will be levied on the earned final grade.  The fifth absence will mean your grade will be dropped by 2%, six absences will drop your final grade 3%, etc.  Remember that every absence will put you in a catch-up situation no matter what the reason, and that will affect your performance in class and your achievement on tests and quizzes.

In addition,  you are expected to be punctual for class.  Tardiness or leaving class early might be counted by your instructor as 1/2 absence.  Absences due to official university business (e.g., band trips, athletic events, etc.) will require an official letter with the dates of projected absences listed.  This list informs your instructor of the absences you will incur for the semester.

When you are absent from a class, it is up to you and not your instructor to investigate your homework assignments.  You will also be expected to have at least read the material in the textbook that you missed and to have completed online homework.  If you miss a quiz due to your absence, no make-up will be offered.  One quiz grade, however, will be dropped for all students.

CLASS PARTICIPATION 15%:  In order to participate fully in class, students must attend each class, be on time and stay for the entire class period.  Students are expected to maintain a complete and organized Spanish notebook, to always bring their notebook and required texts to class and to come prepared to every class (with all assignments completed).  To receive a good participation grade, students are also expected to raise their hand in order to volunteer answers or to ask questions, to speak as much Spanish as possible, to always be on task and to help other classmates when possible.  Your instructor may add additional criteria for grading of participation.

ON-LINE PRACTICES 20%:
The student Workbook/lab manual online is an essential part of this course.  It contains all grammar and vocabulary practice, pronunciation and listening comprehension exercises and additional readings. You CANNOT expect to do well in this course or in the next sequence of courses (Spanish 211-212) if you are not doing the exercises in the online workbook/lab manual.  You are responsible for  completing the appropriate workbook exercises as assigned in the syllabus.  Your instructor will collect a specified number of open-ended practices from the online material.  The instructor has the right to take any practice and record the grade in their gradebook.   Again, in order to pass this course, students must complete online assignments as specified in the syllabus.

ON-LINE QUIZZES 5%: At the end of each chapter in the online workbook, there is a prueba de práctica that you must complete.  They will comprise 5% of your final grade and prepare you for in-class quizzes.

ON-LINE PARA ENTREGAR:  You will need to complete all Para Entregar activities online.  Your instructor will select a total of 10 of those to grade and return to you.

IN-CLASS QUIZZES 20%:  Quizzes are based on the on-line workbook/lab practices.  Again, there are no make-ups for in-class quizzes. One quiz grade will be dropped for all students.

MIDTERM & FINAL EXAMS 40%:
Please make arrangements with your work, extracurricular activities, etc. so that you don't miss the exam.  There will be a make-up exam for the midterm only.   Only students who have a time conflict due to the midterm exam overlapping with another course will be given a make-up.  Documentation must be provided with enough time to validate the student's schedule.  There will be one, and only one make-up date and it will occur before the actual Midterm date and not after that date.  You must submit your name early to be allowed to take the make-up and you will need to bring your student ID to take the make-up exam.

                                                  Make-up date and time:   Tuesday, 10/7/03 - 3:00pm - 5:00pm    Location: TBA

INCLEMENT WEATHER/CLASS CANCELLATION POLICY:  In the unlikely event that class is cancelled due to the weather or any other reason, you must follow your syllabus.  This means that you should study the material on the pages given on the syllabus, do the activities (write them out) in the textbook on the pages listed on your syllabus, and do the homework listed on the syllabus for that day.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:  Any cases of cheating will result in an immediate and final course grade of F.  The following are considered infractions of academic honesty and conduct:
