Lower division Spanish courses at the University of Tennessee consist
of a four sequence program that begins with Spanish 111. The second semester
is Spanish 112. We also offer an intensive course, Spanish 150, for students
who have taken Spanish in high school or at some other institution but
have not maintained their Spanish enough to go into Spanish 211. The second
year sequence consists of Spanish 211 and 212. Students should take the
Spanish
placement exam to determine the appropriate level at which they should
begin taking Spanish at UTK.
Regular academic year:
-
In the Fall and Spring we offer intensive Spanish 211-212 courses that
meet two hours on MWF.
-
In the Spring, we offer a 111-112 intensive Spanish course that also meets
two hours on MWF.
-
Finally, we offer two semesters of a Spanish honors course in lieu of the
traditional second-year sequence. Students may take Spanish honors 217
in lieu of 211 and 218 instead of 212.
We recognize that most students at U.T have to complete a two-year
language requirement. To facilitate this requirement, we offer lower division
Spanish courses at other times in addition to the regular academic year.
Special courses to complete two-year requirement:
-
Intensive summer program, Spanish 111-212. Students meet from 8:30 am to
2:00 pm for nine weeks in the summer.
-
May mini-term, Spanish 211-212. Students meet from 9:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m
for 3 weeks.
-
Evening School, Intensive Spanish 111-112 course in the Fall that meets
for three hours in the evening on two nights per week. A follow-up Spanish
211-212 course is offered in the Spring. It meets two nights a week, three
hours per evening.
By the end of the 2nd semester, students should have been sensitized (does
not mean they are capable of producing) most fundamental structures in
the Spanish language.
