Student Health Service has a staff psychiatrist and psychologist that are available through appointment. Students are also encouraged to visit the Student Counseling Center on campus.

The University has developed the Distressed Student Protocol (VolAware) to assist distressing students. If a student's behavior represents an immediate threat, contact 911. If the threat is not immediate, but are you concerned the student may harm self or others call (865) 974-HELP(4357). For more information visit the VolAware website.

Dr. William K. Hahn was a distinguished undergraduate student at the University of Kansas. He earned both his master's degree and doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Purdue University where he was the recipient of the prestigious James D. Linden award for excellence. He completed an internship in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. He has been with UT since 1987, where he has taught graduate and undergraduate courses and published numerous articles on topics in individual and group psychotherapy.

Lucy Kniseley is a certified Advanced Practice Nurse, specializing in Adult Mental Health. She earned undergraduate degrees from Antioch College and The University of Tennessee, and a Masters in Nursing from The University of Tennessee. She maintains national certification through American Nurses Credentialing Center. Prior to her work at Student Health Service, she had extensive mental health experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Dr. Smith graduated from Ole Miss in 1983, and then received an MD from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1987. He completed training in Adult and Child Psychiatry at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic of the University of Pittsburgh in 1992, and then joined the Student Health Service in July, 1992. Dr. Smith is Board Certified in General Psychiatry, and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
