Women's Clinic
The UT Student Health Service provides a variety of gynecological
services. These services include routine pap smears and testing for
sexually transmitted infections. Patients interested in family planning
services (birth control pills or depo provera) are encouraged to make
appointments through the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) at
215-5016. The Knox County Health Department has five locations in
Knoxville, one of which is located in the lower level of the UT Student
Health Service building. Although located in the same building, KCHD
Family Planning is a separate service and as such has a different set-up
in regard to medical records, guidelines and fees.
Knox County Health Department charges are based on a "sliding scale"
determined by the patient's income. Proof of income (paycheck stubs) is
required at the time of service. The minimum charge for the examination
is $0 while the maximum charge may reach $100.00 (Exam, lab work, and
possibly 3 or 4 packs of pills). The charge for oral contraceptive
refills range from $0 to $5.00 per pack and are dispensed by the KCHD
Family Planning Clinic. The clinic carries a variety of these oral
contraceptives but does not have Yasmin or Nuva
Ring.
The Student Health Service charges for gynecological exams include the
following:
- Pap Smear (thin prep) - $32.00
- Chlamydia - $12.00
- HIV - $14.00
- HPV - $94.00
- RPR (syphilis) - $4.00
- Herpes (culture)/Typing I or II - $25.00/Type $23.00
- Herpes blood test - $13.00
- Gonorrhea - No charge
The UTSHS cost range for examination and testing is usually $40.00-
$70.00. If a patient also desires birth control, a prescription will be
given which may be taken to a local pharmacy. Oral contraceptives cost
$30.00-$50.00 per month.
Any patient having a gynecological problem is encouraged to make an
appointment with the UT Student Health Service at 974-3648. Patients who
need routine pap smears and oral contraceptives or depo provera are
encouraged to use the Family Planning service at KCHD by calling the
appointment number 215-5016.
