[The following resolution was approved by the Faculty Senate on September 17, 2001.]
WHEREAS, Higher Education in the State of Tennessee is in need of significant increases in state support to provide the citizens of Tennessee with a high quality system of higher education;
WHEREAS, The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is in need of increased state funding to fulfill its teaching and research mission as the land grant college in Tennessee and as the flag ship public university in the State of Tennessee; and
WHEREAS, increased funding for higher education and for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, depends upon meaningful tax reform at the state level;
RESOLVED, by the Faculty Senate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, that:
The State's government must undertake and complete the tax and financial reform necessary to provide the State of Tennessee with a system of higher education that will help make Tennessee a leader in the United States and the world of the twenty-first century; and
The Faculty Senate, in conjunction with the Student Government Association, the Progressive Student Alliance, and other interested organizations, invites legislators to campus to demonstrate the effects that the lack of tax reform has had upon higher education.
