BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The Board of Trustees is the legal source of authority for the governance of the University of Tennessee.

PRESIDENT

The President is delegated powers for policy and administrative control of the University of Tennessee System.

CHANCELLOR

The Chancellor is delegated powers for the policy and administrative control of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

FACULTY SENATE

The Faculty Senate is delegated the power to enact regulations concerning:

  1. The educational policy of the University;

  2. Policies regarding requirements for admission, retention, readmission, graduation, and honors;

  3. Policies for the approval of candidates for degrees;

  4. Criteria for faculty appointment, promotion, tenure, and retirement;

  5. Criteria for the selection of the Chancellor and other campus administrative officers;

  6. Criteria, in conjunction with corresponding governing bodies of the other campuses of the University, for the selection of the President and other system officers;

  7. Athletics Policies.
 
STUDENT SENATE

The Student Senate is delegated the power to enact regulations concerning:

  1. Policies for the regulation of student conduct;

  2. Policies for the regulation of student housing and food services;

  3. Policies governing student activities;

  4. Establishment of disciplinary and appeal procedures.
Notes:

  1. Powers not delegated to the Faculty and Student Senates remain directly under the control of the Chancellor. These include, but are not limited to, matters of budgetary control and administration of all University policies.

  2. The Faculty and Student Senates may make recommendations to the Chancellor on matters of University governance not specifically delegated to them.

  3. The Chancellor holds veto power over actions of the Faculty and Student Senates. Such veto may be appealed to the President, and thence to the Board of Trustees.
