Name: Lindsay McClain
Title of Program: Peace and Reconciliation: Exploring New Perspectives in Post-Colonial Africa
E-mail Address: lmcclai4@utk.edu
Hometown: Franklin, TN
Year: Sophomore
Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2010
Description of Program: I focus on various dimensions of peace studies and conflict resolution. In the past, diplomacy and economic sanctions have been the two most prevalent avenues for peacebuilding, but I would like to explore and then advocate the power of the arts in bridging gaps in sects of humanity.
Departmental Emphases: Sociology, Anthropology, Communications, History, Religious Studies, and Philosophy
Faculty Mentor: Dr. Rosalind I. J. Hackett
Plans after graduation (career, graduate/professional school, etc.): I have aspirations to join the Peace Corps and go to law school for public interest law. I see myself ten years from now working within an NGO abroad, researching a conflict situation in an African nation and working with local community leaders to help them resolve the suffering of their people.
Other Academic Interests: I really enjoy languages, but there just isn’t enough time to do it all!
Prior Enrollment at Other Colleges or Universities: N/A
Study Abroad: I have been accepted to study abroad Spring 2008 at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. The following spring I would like to enroll in the Peace Studies department at Gulu University in Uganda. There I would also conduct research for my senior project involving the arts and healing and also intern at the Janani Luwum Center for Development.
Research Experiences or Internships: I will be traveling with Dr. Hackett this summer to Africa where I will hopefully do research on the role of music in African society.
Part-time employment; Hobbies; Campus Clubs/Activities: Knoxville Jazz for Justice, Amnesty International, Rotaract, Mellow Mushroom (Franklin)
