Hometown: Newport, TN

Year: Junior

Anticipated Graduation Date: Spring or Summer 2009

Description of Program: A curriculum built upon the requirements of the Arts and Sciences Bachelor of Science in Chemistry degree is central to my program; however, modifications have been made to allow for additional courses in physics and for extensive involvement in scientific research at the undergraduate level. My research is currently focused on the structures, solution-state conformations, and hydration characteristics of small biomolecules and involves synthetic and structural characterization techniques with particular emphasis on nuclear magnetic resonance and neutron scattering experiments.

Departmental Emphases: chemistry, physics, mathematics

Faculty Mentor: Dr. Fred Schell, Chemistry

Plans after graduation (career, graduate/professional school, etc.): graduate school or a combined MD PhD program.

Other Academic Interests: graphic design, computer and information science

Prior Enrollment at Other Colleges or Universities:

Study Abroad: no formal program planned but many anticipated trips to international scientific user facilities for neutron scattering experiments beginning fall 2007

Research Experiences or Internships: undergraduate researcher in Turner and Baker Groups in Department of Chemistry; scientific affiliation with Center for Molecular Biophysics, Oak Ridge National Laboratories.

Part-time employment; Hobbies; Campus Clubs/Activities: UT Chancellor’s Honors program, Amnesty International at UTK
