nAnother significant enactment in the area of gender discrimination is Title IX of the Federal Education Act
of 1972, which authorized
the withholding of federal funds from
educational institutions that engage in sex discrimination.
nThe most obvious result of this statute has been the movement toward gender equity in collegiate athletics through which young women across the country have been afforded opportunities to participate in athletic competition that was once the sole province of men.
nMoreover, many young women who would not otherwise have received a college education have been able to go to college under an athletic scholarship.
