nIn May 1998, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a new suit against Microsoft, charging that by integrating its
own Internet browser, called
Internet Explorer, into its Windows
’95 operating system, Microsoft had effectively prevented its main rival Netscape from getting access to
computer desktops for its own
nMoreover, the Justice Department charged Microsoft with entering into non-competition agreements with computer manufacturers that forced them to include the Internet Explorer program with each new computer shipped with the popular Windows operating system.
nThe Justice Department argued that these practices
stifled competition and
innovation in the software industry.
