nIn the case of
minor misdemeanors, including many traffic violations, trials are often held in a summary fashion without the use of a jury, usually at the defendantís first appearance
in court. The U.S.
Supreme Court has held that a jury trial is not constitutionally required unless the defendant is subject to incarceration for
more than six months. In
a summary trial the charges are read, the defendant is asked to plead to the charges, and a judgment is reached, often within a few minutes.
