Vision & Goals

SCALE-IT ModelSCALE-IT seeks to train scientists to apply appropriate computing tools to solve quantitative problems to all scales of biology; thus creating a new breed of biocomputational scientists.

The goals of SCALE-IT include:

  • Training students to address the most challenging sub-cellular to organismal problems in biology.

  • Educating computationally-savvy biologists who can more effectively function at the interface of the computational and biological disciplines.

  • Providing a solid foundation in computational science to incorporate better high performance computing and grid computing approaches to biological questions.

  • Enhancing education, training, and outreach with new curriculum, in-depth problem-based learning and broad experiences for professional development.

  • Building a community through mentoring and team-based activities.

  • Enabling students to reflect upon the ethical implications of science as it moves forward with new tools and comprehensive approaches.

  • Developing communication skills to impart excitement and interest to the public and computing and biological sciences by including training opportunities in science communication and media relations
