"Hyper-links" to the World Seminar
An essential for career development is to adequately prepare students for the professional world beyond graduate school. Graduates from the SCALE-IT program will have options to enter the workforce in academics, research institutes, national laboratories, the corporate world, or public service at agencies such as NSF and NIH. While the SCALE-IT curriculum has given the students the skills and experience to succeed in these positions some questions still remain.
- What do these careers hold?
- How do they differ?
- Which is best suited for each graduate?
- What are next steps needed to advance to a desired position?
- How can a professional and personal life be balanced?
Therefore, the SCALE-IT program will offer a “Hyper-Links” to the World course each spring to help students prepare for the next step in their careers. The course will be held weekly as an informal seminar with panel discussions and guest speakers from the various job sectors. Students will actively participate by recommending speakers and topics for discussion. This course will be designed as a part of our mission to develop the “whole” scientist, and its practical appeal will contribute to retention and satisfaction of students in our program.
