Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

When do I apply?
Formal applications are due at the end of February for the coming Fall. However, early and frequent contact with the program manager expressing interest in the program will help you determine if SCALE-IT is the right program for you.

How do I apply?
Apply to the appropriate graduate study program for your research interests. Contact Harry Richards, SCALE-IT Program Manager, to inform him of your intention so that he can get a copy of your application for SCALE-IT’s use. Go to the SCALE-IT application page and fill out the SCALE-IT specific form.

What does the SCALE-IT program offer?
This fellowship program offers an immersive, interdisciplinary experience that enables participants to integrate computational and biological sciences. SCALE-IT provides a means to conduct research across disciplines and interdepartmentally. Students will be afforded extracurricular professional development opportunities, personal attention, guidance and mentorship.

What degree will I receive from this program?
SCALE-IT does not confer degrees. A student will receive a degree from an associated department in which he/she is enrolled. Additionally, SCALE-IT students are required to participate in the IGMCS program, which will result in a computational science minor.

How many students will be admitted each year?
The SCALE-IT program will offer up to eight fellowships each year.

Is SCALE-IT for doctoral students only?
Yes, SCALE-IT fellowships will only be offered to students pursuing doctoral degrees.

Who is eligible to apply?
An applicant must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident to qualify for a SCALE-IT fellowship. Additionally, the applicant must have a demonstrable background in a mathematical, computational or biological discipline.

What happens after my two years of SCALE-IT funding ends?
The student is to be supported by a faculty mentor and/or departmental assistantships.

If you want any further information or have additional comments or questions please contact Harry Richards, Program Manager.
