Discussion
A two-hour discussion accompanied by hands-on activities will expose all SCALE-IT students to break-through advances that define the state-of-the-art in this dynamic field by reading current publications and by interacting with new software. Faculty and senior students as trainers will facilitate the meeting. The group will typically meet in the Computational Biology Teaching and Interaction Laboratory at UT, supplemented by field trips and demonstrations at the NLCF at ORNL.
While the “Computational Biology & Bioinformatics” series in the core curriculum will provide foundational knowledge, the discussion and hands-on activity will deal with current high profile research topics, publications, and software tools. Combined with the “Challenge of the Month,” the scholarly exchange of ideas among the group will introduce students to team-oriented work and the experiential learning should counter intimidating aspects of working at the advanced computing level with examples of recent progress that has been achieved.
