Dr. Songning Zhang, Ph.D.
Dr. Songning Zhang is an associate professor in Biomechanics and the director of the Biomechanics/Sports Medicine Laboratory at The University of Tennessee. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in biomechanics and applied anatomy and supervises doctoral, M.S., and undergraduate students. He is also a professor at the Shanghai University of Sports, China and a visiting professor at the Nanjing Institute of Physical Culture & Sports, China.
Dr. Zhang’s research interests are mainly focused on biomechanics of human movements. More specifically, he is interested in lower extremity functions and impact loading attenuation in dynamic activities, injury mechanisms and prevention, biomechanical functions of athletic footwear and medical orthoses, human performance mechanisms, and performance variability and research design in biomechanics research. Dr. Zhang has received external grants from adidas International and DeRoyal Industries, Inc. to conduct research projects on athletic footwear biomechanics of cross-training shoes, running shoes and basketball shoes, 3D biomechanical analyses of basketball movements, basketball match analyses, and biomechanical evaluations of spinal orthoses and short-leg walkers. Current ongoing projects include 1) Mechanical loading and shock attenuation during dynamic movements, 2) Effects of athletic footwear in impact and shock attenuation during dynamic activities, 3) Evaluation of various spinal orthoses and walkers, and 4) Lower extremity joint modeling and loading in dynamic activities.
His publications include works appearing in biomechanics and sports medicine journals, national and international proceedings in biomechanics, and a book chapter. He has many presentations at national and international conferences in biomechanics and sports medicine. He reviews papers for Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, Journal of Applied Biomechanics, Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, Journal of Sports Sciences, and books and book chapters in biomechanics and sports medicine. He has also served on the committees of American College of Sports Medicine.
