The graduate program in Sport Studies derives its intellectual identity from psychology, sociology, and anthropology as well as from cultural studies, ethnography, feminist theory and other specialized forms of inquiry.

Master's Program Information

Offering areas of specialization in either Sport Sociology or Sport Psychology, the Sport Studies Master's Program prepares students to teach in the sociocultural areas of Sport Studies (e.g. sport psychology, sociology of sport) within higher education and/or to conduct work in these fields within more applied educational, social, political, and sport settings. Students are expected to obtain a significant grounding in the allied parent disciplines.

Doctoral Program Information

The PhD with a major in Education offers a concentration in Sport Studies with areas of specialization in Sport Sociology, Sport Psychology, Motor Behavior, and Sport Management. The progam stresses an interdisciplinary approach to course work and research and expects its students to become proficient in qualitative and quantitative research methods. Students are expected to obtain a significant grounding in the allied and parent disciplines

The Sport Studies Ph.D. Program prepares students to teach in higher education and/or to conduct work within applied educational and sport settings. The Sport Psychology specialization may also include mental training opportunities with local athletes and teams. The program usually takes three years (2 years of course work and 1 year for dissertation) and includes 15 credits in the concentration, 15 credits in research, 9 credits in specialization, 6 credits in cognate area, and 24 dissertation credits.
