Admission/Applying to the Graduate Programs

Requirements

  • Pre-requisite degree, if any
  • Pre-requisite courses, if any
  • Required undergraduate GPA
  • Standardized Test Score required and minimum scores

Application Deadlines

  • Number of applicants and number the program admits each year
  • Possible start semesters
  • When to start applying for each
  • When decisions are made for each (“priority admission” deadline)
  • Final deadline for applications for each
  • Assistantship deadlines

All Programs in the Department of Exercise, Sport, & Leisure Studies require the following materials:

Required Materials

  • Department application (Send to the Department Admissions Coordinator) (link)
  • Resume or C.V. (Send to the Department Admissions Coordinator)
  • Three Ratings Forms (link), with or without letters of recommendation, with at least two forms from academic resources (Send to the Department Admissions Coordinator)
  • Sample of writing (usually all or part of thesis, but can be a published article); required for doctoral applicants
  • Graduate School Application (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office)
  • A $35 non-refundable application fee in the form of a personal check, cashier's check, money order or bank draft payable to the University of Tennessee. The fee must accompany the application. If completing the online application, the application fee must be paid online using a credit card. (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office)
  • Official transcripts from each post-secondary school attended (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office)
  • GRE (Sport Management masters & all doctoral applicants only) (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office)
  • TOEFL (international students only)
  • Financial Documentation, International students only.  Documented evidence of financial resources sufficient to support the student for 12 months of study. (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office)

Optional

  • G.R.E. (Graduate Record Examination) scores, taken within the last five years.  Required for Sport Management master’s & all doctoral programs only; not required by others. (Send to the Graduate Admissions Office) 
  • Letter of Intent or Statement of purpose
  • All interested doctoral applicants should contact the program’s faculty members to explore their “fit” for research interests.
  • Visits to UT are highly encouraged for doctoral applicants and welcome for masters applicants.
