At the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Gerontology has several program opportunities for study.

  • Undergraduate Minor in Gerontology (12 credit hours)
  • Graduate Minor in Gerontology (12 credit hours)
  • Post-Bac/Graduate Certificate in Gerontology (21+ credit hours)

Three colleges at the University of Tennessee have vested interest in Gerontology. These include the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, the College of Nursing, and the College of Social Work. Presently, the University of Tennessee is one of several institutions offering opportunities in gerontology. The others include East Tennessee State University and Middle Tennessee State University. It is important to recognize the added value of the program at the University of Tennessee due to the many interdisciplinary linkages both within the campus family and externally, within the surrounding community. The audience for these programs come from the practice community including community-based organizations, non-profit organizations, state and county agencies, private and commercial enterprises, and the older adults within the representative communities. Students in these programs interact with agencies, older adults, community organizations, etc. during their education in the classroom, and in research in the field, their own or sponsored under a mentor. The gerontology programs at the University of Tennessee are still in their infancy but are rapidly developing with community research and practicum linkages and opportunities.

Gerontology has an enduring academic value. Everyone is aging, and the professionals in this field should be trained at quality institutions. Our programs prepare students to be effective citizens in our current society, and they touch upon many core disciplines within the scope of this field. The Gerontology programs also provide comprehensive opportunities for education, research, and community service, working directly in research with the faculty through grants and the Community of Gerontology Scholars (COGS), coordinated by the College of Nursing.
