Adhering to the motto of “Students Serving Students...Past...Present...Future,” SAA has made tremendous contributions to campus life and to the community since our founding in 1971. SAA has won numerous regional awards from the CASE-ASAP conventions for its contribution to student life and advancement at The University of Tennessee.
SAA has been recognized by The University of Tennessee for its service. In 2004, SAA won the award for the Most Outstanding Student Organization. SAA also has was awarded the University Citation for Extraordinary Contributions to Campus Life in 1999, 2001, and 2007.
One of the most popular activities of the organization, the Big Orange Bash serves as SAA’s major fund-raising effort to help with the implementation of other services. Postcards are sent to parents of university students at the beginning of the year, asking if they would like to send a cake to their son or daughter on their birthday or other special occasion. The cakes are bought at the Sweet Tooth Bakery on UT’s campus and then delivered on a rotation basis by SAA members. The recipients are always surprised and enjoy being remembered on their special day.
UNITE is the newest student group under the Student Alumni Associates. Students pay a membership fee to become part of UNITE. In return, they are invited to a tailgate before each home game, where they receive the special BEAT! T-shirt for that week. Participants also get to mix and mingle with a variety of UT alumni. Membership in UNITE gives students the opportunity to apply for membership in SAA.
The UTNAA hosts an annual event for their scholarship recipients. SAA members are always on hand to assist with the decorations and check-in. They also participate in the program as well.
Each year the Alumni Association and SAA ask students to nominate their outstanding teachers. SAA members work shifts at balloting booths, assisting in the nomination process and informing students of the overall purpose of the award. Two members of SAA also serves on the Award for Outstanding Teacher selection committee, reviewing the teachers nominated and observing those teachers in the classroom.
SAA participates in the campus-wide Volunteer Challenge week by spending a whole week volunteering at a charity in Knox County. In the past, members have worked with The Boys and Girls Club of Knoxville, United Way, and Pacesetters, as well as other charitable organizations.
SAA participates in Orange and White Week, sponsored by the Student Government Association. SAA hosts an ice cream social and decorates the Tyson House in orange and white.
This is the membership recognition program of the Student Alumni Associates. After 30 hours of service, members receive a bronze pin, and after 75 hours of service, members are awarded a silver pin. Gold pins award the highest level of service – 130 hours!
UNITE 101 will be on Tuesday, August 20 from 11:30AM-12:30PM at the Tyson Alumni House! Join us for free food and learn what your membership can do for you!
