XI. Kidney and Gut Anatomy Lab

The kidney of a fish is usually located along the backbone at the top of the body cavity. It is subdivided on the basis of histological features into an anterior (or head) and a posterior part.

The alimentary canal of carnivorous fish is usually a short S-shaped loop as shown to the right. In the picture above, the alimentary canal has been spread out so the features are easier to see.

The probe in the photo to the left is shown lifting an empty gallbladder. The gallbladder is empty because the contents (bile) have been discharged following a recent meal (note that the stomach and gut are filled with food).
