III. External and Gill Anatomy Lab

In our labs, we will dissect a rainbow trout. The photos below show external and gill anatomy at the gross [ha!] level. Rolling over the photo will hide labels, so you can quiz yourself, while rolling over parts of the photo will reveal individual labels one at a time. Clicking on some of the parts will bring up enlarged views in pop-up windows. The "__ Zoom Ins" label in photos with pop-ups indicate the number of enlarged views available. You can see anatomical characters at the gross level and then zoom in for a histological view of the same tissue.

Above are the external features of the trout.

In the photo to the left, the opercula is lifted to show a bit of gill tissue called the pseudobranch. While the function of the pseudobranch is uncertain it has been suggested that it serves to increase the partial pressure of oxygen in the eye.

Below, the opercula is removed and the arches spread to show the main parts of the gill.
Above, the gill is shown as it normally lies, the Zoom Ins show the histology of gill tissue.
