Windward-Leeward round the marks |
First outing of the season, in advance of the CYC Annual Meeting, which began at 4:30 p.m. Wind finally settled from the west after a 30-minute postponement, and race committee quickly set a half-mile windward-leeward course, twice around with a downwind finish, for the fleet of six. Nice moderate breeze (5-knot average) for the first race in which the first boat across (Jeff Gamey, Pearson 26) was clocked in 43:31. John Bocko (Helms 25) came across second and took first on corrected time. Wind died substantially just prior to start of Race 2, so the course was designated as once around with the first boat (Chuck Meyer, Santana 20) finishing in 49:16. Chuck also took first on corrected time with John second.
Biggest news of the day was the performance of John Bocko. After Todd Weir helped tune his rig, including moving the mast back substantially, John and Todd sailed two competitive races. The first and second finishes give John the early lead in the series. So, we now have another high handicap boat eager to bite folks in the hiney.

2 Races- Windward-Leeward round the marks |
Nice breeze for Race 1, which saw Vlasta Kunc (skippering Jeff Gamey's Pearson 26) cross first and also win on corrected time. Frank Larimer (Santana 20) and Neil Quigley (Benetreau 235) were a close second and third, respectively. Wind died for Race 2 and only three boats managed to complete the shortened course. Vlasta again took line and corrected-time honors, followed by Larimer and Randy Schonagen (Catalina 27).

2 Races- Windward-Leeward round the marks |
Wind less than forecast, but enough for two races. Vlasta Kunc (Pearson 26) got off nicely in both races and took both line and corrected-time honors each time. Race one was a lengthy, twice around, four-mile course that saw Neil Quigley (Beneteau 235) take second on corrected time and Randy Schonagen (Catalina 27) take third. Randy just nosed out Kurt Finnie (Soling) for the third spot. Wind died somewhat for race Two and RC Chuck Meyer called one time around. Randy and Neil swapped places in Race Two with Finnie again fourth.
Four races now with Vlasta at the helm and four firsts, giving him the overall lead over Frank Larimer (Santana 20). Neil Quigley has moved into third place overall.

No wind, no races |
Wind did not cooperate, so we were unable to have any races during the first annual Holiday Sailabration. We did, however, have a nice gathering at the clubhouse for a discussion on race management and racing rules. We will try again next Sunday, Dec. 16, which will be our final outing before the holiday break. Kurt Finnie is Race Chair. So come on out on the 16th. |

Temp in the 30s, wind chill in the 20s, so no races |
Lots of wind but temperature below the minimum, so no racing once again. We did have a nice discussion about predicting and recognizing wind conditions in the CYC racing area, how you get back in the race following a bad start, and more on setting the course and management for a CYC low-water race.
Next outing will be Sunday, Jan. 6. We'll again meet at the clubhouse at 12:30 to announce the day's activities, answer questions, place crew on boats, etc. |

Wind below minimum, but, ever the optimist, Race Chair George Hubbell started a race after a 40-minute delay -- the forecast did predict 8-10 during the afernoon. Unfortunately, it never happened. A few brave souls managed to complete the course, but most of the fleet -- many of which were sailing backwards on their way to the dam -- retired after 45 minutes. Thus, the First Annual Holiday Sailathon is mercifully put to rest . We'll get 'em next year! As per the Sailing Instructions, races sailed outside the race criteria are not scored as part of the series. |

Two races, one that counts |
Another drifter, but thanks to the persistence of race Chair Neil Quigley the three boats that hung around managed to sail one race that was a keeper. After a lengthy postponment, Neil set a short course and started a race below the wind mimimum. Just as the boats were finishing the non-scored race, a 4 mph breeze moved in from the west. Neil hustled back up the lake and set a leeward mark and starting line and got the three boats off just before the 4 p.m. cutoff. The race was a short one, but Randy Schonagen (Catalina 27) took first, followed by John Bocko (Helms 25) and Chuck Meyer (Santanta 20). Kudos to Neil and the racers for hanging tough.

Two races |
Wind didn't turn out as well as forecast, but the sunny skies attracted 15 boats and Race Chair Todd Weir managed to run two races, getting off the second just prior to the 4 p.m. cutoff. Randy Schonagen (Catalina 27) had a good afternoon, winning the first race and taking second in the nightcap. Vlasta Kunc (Pearson 26) was the winner of Race 2 and held first place in the overall standings. Frank Larimer (Santana 20) posted a second and a third and moved into second place overall.

Wind -- and plenty of it. RC John Bocko forced to the run races off the shore because of cranky outboard. Vlasta Kunc (Pearson 26) continued to hold first place in the overall standings by taking both races on corrected time.

Two races |
Finally -- wind! A fleet of 10 took advantage of moderate breezes and a glorious afternoon to put two races in the book. Philip Spurlin (Impulse 26) and crew walked away with two wins, besting Frank Larimer (Santana 20) in Race One and Randy Schonagen (Catalina 27) in Race Two. Series leader Vlasta Kunc (Pearson 26) had a previous engagement at the Thistle Midwinters East in St. Petersburg but maintained his lead over Larimer in the overall standings.

'07-08 Series low water series closes on a brisk afternoon that was a little nippy at times but provided plenty of wind. Randy Schonagen sailed his Soling to three firsts as the day began with 11 boats and finished with six in the final race.

Scoring System
The "Cox-Sprague Percentage" scoring system was developed by William S "Bill" Cox (New Canaan, CT) and Henry Bancroft "Banny" Sprague (Naples, FL), and adopted by the Yacht Racing Association of Long Island Sound. It is a curved-line system and is based upon the premise that, for a Series, the scoring system should satisfy at least three conditions:
(a) Points for each finishing place should increase or decrease in some way relative to the variation in the number of starters.
(b) The principle of "mathematical weighting" should be built into the system so that races with more starters will have a greater mathematical effect upon the series score, and races with fewer starters will have a lesser mathematical effect upon the series score; and
(c) The final step in determining each boat's series score should be to calculate her "percentage of perfection". This calculation is a number which results from the division of points awarded per race by the points which would have been awarded if the starter had finished first.
