statue of liberty national monument, governors island
On Liberty Island we entered the Statue and went to the top of the pedestal. As we left the Statue, we visited the museum.
This is a photo of Governors Island, named for its use as the residence of the Dutch governors of New Amsterdam and the English governors of New York. The island became part of the defense of New York harbor. Two structures, Fort Jay and Castle Williams, were built by the newly independent United States to aid in this effort. Eventually, the island saw use as the largest U.S. Coast Guard base. It was closed in 1997 and in 2001 the two historic forts and their surroundings became a national monument.
