gettysburg national military park, page two
When Union officers finally rallied their retreating troops, they were occupying Cemetary Ridge just south of town. The Confederate troops took up positions on Seminary Ridge, west of the Union positions. The following pictures were taken while travelling down (south) on Seminary Ridge.
The Pennsylvania Memorial can just barely be seen. It is the white building just offset from the middle of this picture.
Another view of Cemetary ridge.
Here is a view of Cemetary Ridge from the Virginia Memorial. It is from this area where Pickett's Charge began. This picture gives a good idea about the distance Confederate soldiers crossed under the barrage of Union artillery in this ill-fated offensive action.
This is a closeup of the above picture, which is looking in the general area of the High Water Mark, and the Angle.
