The fighting began on July 1, 1863 to the Northwest of town. These pictures are taken from the area in which this part of the battle took place.

The small hill in the middle of this photo to the left of the white building is Barlow Knoll. It was occupied by Union artillery.
The Union soldiers held for a little while, but eventually their lines broke and Union troops began retreating through town.
