SYLLABUS AND COURSE INFORMATION
The
textbook
for this course is Marc Loudon, Organic
Chemistry, 4th edition. You'll also want the accompanying Study Guide and Solutions Manual,
4th edition, written by Loudon and Stowell. Dr. Loudon has compiled
two lists of
errors,
one for the TEXTBOOK
and one for the STUDY
GUIDE
and has posted them at his own web site (updated February 1,
2006).
If you'll let me know
about
other errors that you find, I'll be pleased to report them to him
(you'll notice that he does give credit to those who find the
errors).
I'll also add any errors that you
find to our own course web site for both TEXTBOOK
and STUDY
GUIDE. Both
of these lists were last updated on December 22, 2005.
THIS PARAGRAPH HAS INFORMATION
FOR THE SMALL NUMBER OF STUDENTS WHO MAY HAVE BEGUN THEIR ORGANIC
CHEMISTRY STUDIES AT UT PRIOR TO FALL SEMESTER, 2004. Much of the material that
was
covered in Chem. 350 with the textbook that we used from 2002 to 2004
(Bruice, "Organic
Chemistry," 3rd ed.) will also be covered in
Chem. 350 with the new text (Loudon, "Organic
Chemistry," 4th ed.).
There are,
however, a few topics from
the old Chem. 350 coverage that UT's organic students will not get to
until Chem. 360; and
there
are some topics that will
be covered in Chem. 350 that formerly didn't
appear until Chem. 360. For the benefit of those who began their
study of Chem. 350 with the Bruice book, I've prepared a TABLE
that shows which topics are covered where.
You'll also find an
extensive set of ANIMATIONS
at Dr. Loudon's web site and on the CD that is packaged with the
text. These are organized according to
chapter in the textbook. Whether you choose to use these
animations to help you learn the material is up to you - try a few and
see what you think of them. They not only show pictures of
molecules in motion (during rotation and during reactions) but often
have
tutorials in which pertinent questions are asked. Those that I've
looked at are very well done.
FOR NO PARTICULARLY GOOD REASON, EXCEPT THAT I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHERE ELSE TO PUT THEM, I'M ATTACHING LINKS TO TRAVEL SAGAS THAT ARE OF PROBABLY LITTLE INTEREST TO ANYONE BUT ME AND A FEW OTHER MISGUIDED SOULS. IN SUMMER, 2000, MY WIFE AND I VISITED HUNGARY, AUSTRIA, GERMANY, AND CZECH REPUBLIC; AND IN 2001 WE SPENT THREE WEEKS IN THE SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS. (WE MADE NO OVERSEAS TRIPS DURING THE GEORGE W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION, NOT WISHING TO HAVE TO ANSWER FOR HIS POLICIES.) IN 2009, WE RESUMED OUR TRAVELS BY TOURING IRELAND AND WALES. IN 2010, WE MADE TWO TRIPS: NEW ZEALAND (IN FEBRUARY) AND A BALTIC CRUISE/DENMARK DRIVE (IN AUGUST). IN 2011, WE VISITED FRANCE (NOTABLY THE LOIRE VALLEY AND BRETAGNE). IN SUMMER 2012, WE VISITED NORTHERN EUROPE (ICELAND, FAROE AND SHETLAND ISLANDS, NORWAY, NETHERLANDS, BELGIUM). IN DECEMBER 2012, WE VISITED GERMANY (BERLIN, NÜRNBERG, AND HEIDELBERG). IN SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2013, WE DID A DRIVING TOUR OF ENGLAND AND A CRUISE ON THE RHINE. IN MARCH-APRIL 2014, WE SPENT FOUR WEEKS IN AUSTRALIA. IN SEPTEMBER 2014, WE CRUISED THE COAST OF NORWAY FROM OSLO TO THE SVALBARD PENINSULA. IN MARCH 2015, WE SPENT A WEEK IN LONDON AND ANOTHER WEEK IN DEVON AND CORNWALL. IN SEPTEMBER 2015, WE VISITED VENICE, CRUISED THE ADRIATIC, DROVE THROUGH THE BLACK FOREST, AND CRUISED THE RHÔNE. IN APRIL 2016, WE VISITED JAPAN. IN 2018, WE TOURED SCOTLAND AND NORTHERN ENGLAND IN MAY; AND WE CRUISED FROM ENGLAND TO FRANCE, SPAIN, AND PORTUGAL IN SEPTEMBER. IN MAY 2019, WE TOURED NETHERLANDS AND BELGIUM, THEN CRUISED ALONG THE COAST OF IRELAND. IN MARCH, 2020, WE HAD HOPED TO SPEND A MONTH IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND, BUT THE CORONA VIRUS CAUSED US TO ABORT THE TRIP ABOUT HALF-WAY THROUGH; WE NEVER GOT TO NEW ZEALAND. FOLLOWING THE COVID-IMPOSED HIATUS, WE TRAVELED TO AMSTERDAM TO BEGIN A CRUISE ALONG THE RHINE AND DANUBE IN MAY-JUNE, 2022. AND IN OCTOBER, 2022, WE TOOK A CRUISE FROM NEW YORK CITY TO MONTREAL, BATTLING HURICAN IAN. IN JANUARY, 2023, WE TOOK A CRUISE THAT WOULD SAIL AROUND THE TWO ISLANDS OF NEW ZEALAND, THEN HEAD TO AUSTRALIA. TWO EVENTS MARRED OUR PLEASURE: (1) OUR LUGGAGE DIDN'T ARRIVE UNTIL NINE DAYS INTO THE CRUISE; AND (2) OUR SHIP WAS DENIED COMING TO FIVE PORTS IN NEW ZEALAND BECAUSE ITS HULL WAS CONTAMINATED WITH FOREIGN MARINE MATTER AND BARNACLES. IN MAY, 2024, WE TOOK A MUCH LESS EVENTFUL CRUISE FROM NORWAY TO DENMARK, THE UK, NETHERLANDS. AND BELGIUM. MOST RECENTLY (JUNE 2025) WE CRUISED THE BRITISH ISLES FROM LONDON TO LONDON, WITH STOPS IN IRELAND, NORTHERN IRELAND, ENGLAND, AND SCOTLAND.
IN THE FOLLOWING
TRAVELOGUES, THE OBSERVATIONS THAT I RECORDED (ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND
THEIR CUSTOMS, THE COUNTRYSIDE, THE FOOD, THE ACCOMMODATIONS, ETC.)
MIGHT BE MILDLY AMUSING TO THOSE WITH WARPED SENSES OF HUMOR OR MIGHT
SERVE AS SOPORIFICS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE TROUBLE FALLING
ASLEEP.
AS FOR PHOTOS FROM THESE TRIPS, I HAVE A SAD STORY. PRIOR TO 2016, I
HAD USED PICASA TO UPLOAD PICTURES, SORT THEM INTO ALBUMS, AND SHARE
THEM WITH EXTERNAL VIEWERS. IN 2017, GOOGLE (WHO IS/ARE? ALL-POWERFUL)
BOUGHT PICASA AND DISCONTINUED IT. SO, PHOTOS TAKEN SINCE 2016 WERE
UPLOADED, INSTEAD, TO MY GOOGLE PHOTOS FOLDER
https://tinyurl.com/y7sbtg3t. THIS WEB SITE IS NOT LONGER ACCESSIBLE TO OUTSIDE VIEWERS.
THERE IS, HOWEVER, A SOLUTION!! IF YOU CLICK ON TRAVEL ALBUM, YOU WILL REACH A PAGE THAT ALLOWS CONNECTIONS TO ALL OF THE TRAVEL PHOTOS SINCE 2000.
FOR BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION (OF AN UNUSUAL SORT), SEE "A PORTRAIT OF THE CHEMISTS AS YOUNG MEN."
