Very Brief Bio

Born in South Carolina, grew up in the Altan Community near Monroe, NC. Was a Distinguished Scholar and elected to Kappa Tau Alpha at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (1966-1970). Received the A.B. in Journalism. Worked at the High Point Enterprise (court and general news), the Chapel Hilll Weekly ( advertising sales) and at the Carteret County News-Times (government and general).

Attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1970-71) as a James Webb Young Scholar and received the M.S. in Advertising. Taught in the School of Business Administration at Youngstown State University (1971-1975). Taught part-time and worked for Catawba Publishing, Hickory, NC, 1976-78.

Taught at Parkland College (1978-83) while attending University of Illinois (1979-82) and received Ph.D. in Communications. Joined the faculty of the Department of Advertising at the University of Tennessee as department head (1984- ). Received the College of Communications' Outstanding Faculty Member Award in 1985, the Outstanding Research Award in 1995, the CERTIFICATE PRATIQUE DE FRANCAISE COMMERCIAL ET ECONOMIQUE DE LA CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE ET D'INDUSTRIE DE PARIS, 1995.
