When will I find out about my room assignment?
You will be notified about three weeks prior to opening day of your room
assignment and roommate. You will receive the name and address of your
roommate along with additional information about moving in. We encourage
students to get in touch with their roommates before arriving.
How are roommate assignments made?
If you would like to request a specific roommate or suitemates, you should
do the following: 1) the applicants must request each other by listing
the requested student's social security number in the space provided at
the bottom of the application. Roommates should be listed in the first
set of boxes and suitemates in the second and third set; 2) both individuals
must request the same three halls and levels of visitation in the same
order. The sooner we receive the applications of all parties, the better
chance you have of an assignment together. Although we try to honor all
mutual roommate requests, space does not permit us to fill all of them.
Assignments are made in application date order, so we encourage students
who wish to be roommates or suitemates to apply at the same time.
If you do not have a specific request for a roommate, you will be assigned with someone at random.
What if I don't get assigned to one of the halls
I preferred?
You may pick up a Hall Change form when you check-in at the beginning
of the semester. Hall Change forms may be turned in on the first day of
class to your front desk. There is a two week freeze on all changes. After
the two week freeze room changes are granted on a space availability basis.
How many people share a bathroom?
In Greve, Hess, and Massey, you share a community bathroom
with the other residents on your floor. The showers are divided into individual showers,
and have shower curtains for privacy, in the community bathrooms.
In Clement, Gibbs, Humes, Morrill, North Carrick, Reese and South Carrick Hall the rooms are set up as suites. You share a bathroom with your roommate and two suitemates.
In the Apartment Residence Hall you share the bathroom with three other students that live in your apartment.
Are there facilities for washing and drying my clothes?
Each residence hall has a laundry facility with washers and dryers. The
cost is $0.75 for each load in each machine. Each student must have an
All-Star Plus account on their student ID card to use the laundry facilities.
Debit Account Replenishing Terminals (DART) are located in Hess, Clement,
Morrill, South Carrick and the Apartment Residence Hall for students to
activate an account or add money to their accounts 24 hours a day.
What appliances should I leave at home?
Students are not allowed to have open flamed (Bunsen burners, lighted
candles, etc.) or opened coil appliances (space heaters, toasters, etc.)
in their rooms. Other items that are not allowed in student rooms are
halogen lamps, incense, electric blankets, and George Foreman Grills.
What about extension cords or multi-plugs?
An extension cord must be UL approved, 16 gauge and not exceed an unspliced
length of six feet with a polarized plug and a single outlet. Power strips
and multi-plugs with surge protectors are allowed in rooms. Extension
cords can not be placed under carpeting or where they will be walked on
- such as across the doorway.
Is cable television available in the residence halls?
Yes! The cost of cable television is built into the room rate.
Are pets allowed?
For health reasons, pets are not allowed in the halls or on the premises.
The only exception is fish and guide dogs
accompanying sight impaired persons.
Is purchasing a meal plan mandatory?
Residents living in Gibbs, Humes, Morrill, North Carrick, South Carrick,
and Reese are required to be on a meal plan.
Residents living in the other seven halls have the option of purchasing
a meal plan. More Info: UT Dining Services
What if I need something repaired in my room?
Each residence hall has its own maintenance and housekeeping staff. In
order to make a maintenance request, students complete and turn in a Maintenance
Request Form at the front desk of their residence hall.
What items should I pack and bring to school?
You should bring toiletries, sheets (please check for building sheet size - most halls have
extra-long beds), blankets, pillow(s), towels, alarm
clock, laundry detergent, laundry basket, digital telephone (if you plan to apply for phone service)
and all school supplies.
What is a Microfridge?
The department of University Housing is providing
a Microfridge in all residence hall rooms except in the Apartment Style Housing (Apartment Residence Hall, Volunteer Hall
& Laurel Hall). It is a combined microwave, refrigerator and freezer.
What about bringing my own refrigerator or microwave?

microfridge appliance is already in the room. Residents in the apartment style halls
may bring a microwave and it should not exceed 600 watts.
What is the alcohol policy?
The University of Tennessee is a dry campus. In accordance with University
regulations, serving, consuming, possession, being under influence or

Each residence hall room has a voice (telephone) port provided at no charge. Any digital phone will work
when plugged into the voice port in the room. As students indicated a preference for
bringing their own phones with various attachments (like message recorders),
as well as using personal cell phones, the telephone instruments were removed.
However, residents in the Apartment Residence Hall, Laurel Hall, and Volunteer Hall,
may purchase local telephone service by contacting Telephone Services at 865-974-3121.
Residents requesting service through Telephone Services will be billed personally for this service.

and it is possible that not all requests may be filled. Questions should
be directed to the Parking
Services office at (865) 974-6031.
How will I receive U.S. mail while I live on campus?
Each residence hall has a post office in the lobby of the building for
students to receive their mail. Students are given their post office box

However, bicycles may not be stored in common areas such as hallways or
stairwells.
What if I need special accommodations?

University Housing as soon as possible. We request that you submit your
requirements in writing so that we can make every effort to accommodate
your needs. You will also need to contact the Office
of Disability Services at (865)-974-6087.
May I have my own room?
Single rooms are very limited on campus and most are located in Greve Hall
& Hess Hall. If we
have been able to accommodate everyone that requires housing, and there
are vacancies, you may apply to keep your room as a single room or move
to a completely vacant room by going to the front desk of your assigned
hall on the first day of classes. There is an additional charge to rent
a double room as a single. If a single room becomes available, you will
be notified through your mailbox.
What if my roommate and I do not get along?
Learning to live in close quarters and with a person you do not know very
well will sometimes present a challenge. Keep the lines of communication
open. Discuss potential areas of conflict and be open to compromise. If
you find that you and your roommate could use some help in getting a discussion
of issues started, your RA can help. If you need further assistance with
a roommate situation please contact your Hall Director. Every effort will
be made to help you and your roommate achieve a solution that will be
beneficial to everyone concerned.
What furniture is provided in my room?
Furnishings vary slightly for each hall. However, most rooms will have
a long twin size bed, desk and chair, a chest of drawers and closet
for each person. Suite style rooms will also have a medicine cabinet for
each person and a sink in the room. All rooms are equipped with a
smoke detector. The Apartment Residence Hall, Volunteer Hall, and Laurel Hall are
also furnished with a sofa, chair and dining table and chairs. The kitchen is equipped with
a refrigerator, range and trash disposer. Volunteer Hall has washer/dryers and dish washers.

currently approximately 7100 students are living in residence halls.

the University system and you will need to contact the Telecommunications
and Network Services Office at (865) 974-9919 to sign-up for service.
What is visitation, and what are my options?

to offer such living arrangements. Students are encouraged to give considerable
thought and attention to their housing selection. The differentiated housing
program offers three distinct types of living atmospheres.
