Undergraduate Program for New Religious Studies Majors
New Rules, Effective Fall 2010 Pending Final Approval
The Department of Religious Studies offers a B.A. Major, an Honors B.A. Major, and a Minor. Each of these programs demands methodological self-consciousness and breath of comparative study, acquired through a package of courses (ten for majors and five for minors) that address both historical and contemporary religions from many parts of the globe. Students may choose various combinations of courses to fulfill our minimum distribution requirements, and will have the opportunity to concentrate on an area of interest.
Courses in our major are primarily historical and comparative in method. They address religious matters from throughout the world, with special strengths in North America, the Middle East, Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and Europe. Our majors achieve a comparative knowledge of religions studied in their distinctive historical and cultural contexts. Because the study of religion has strong relevance and overlap with many other disciplines (e.g. History, Anthropology, Sociology, and Classics) and because many religious studies courses count toward general education requirements at UTK, many of our students undertake secondary majors and minors as complements to other majors, or conversely pursue secondary majors or minors in other fields alongside a primary focus on Religious Studies.
