Meeting Minutes October 28, 2008

• Painting the rock and pizza… all in one meeting!!

• Jason: Jerome Baudry – Professor

o theoretical research

o using program to show molecular environments

o predict folding of proteins – about 90% successful

o BCMB 452 Undergrad Credit, but can do without credit

o Lord of the flies: reverse transcribe RNA of pupa brain; hibernation cycle

o Vet assistant at hospital, but might still be in hiring freeze; Aaron, Gina, or Nancy; summer is good time to work

• Allison: has shadowing/volunteering contacts available and will email them soon

o Ask teachers/advisors for names of people in vet school that do something that interest you

• Internship with vet oncologist in Memphis and got a job that fall

o East TN research

o Have contact because shows greater interest

• Dan: small animal clinic past 4 years - research projects

o Llama fecal samples

o Talk to teachers!

• Carl: endocrinology lab

o Worked in summer; applied through prevet club!

o Seminars in vet school

o Know way around vet school; meet people (teachers, students, etc.)

• Me: TN Wildlife Center

o Wildcat farm

o Contact Bobby Bean

o Lots of grunt work, but get exposure to lots of cats

o Talk to Dr. Heitman if interested

• While volunteering at church, met Ms. Jones, and was offered a job interview; networking is important – know the right people

• Karen at the vet school would be best contact if want job there

• Research experience at vet school, contact Dr. Hill

• Tiger Haven, Zoo always accepting volunteers

• Internship at the zoo: research project – studied behavioral interactions in lions

o Can sign up as a course through advisor

• Dude ranch:

o Good place to work with horses

o Online and searched dude ranches

o Most hire for summer work

o Wyoming; most are out west

• Cherokee farms: feed animals and clean up after them

• Human medicine is good experience, too

o Diverse experiences

o Easier job to get because more of them

• Volunteer at Star

o Basically get to do what you want

o Not paid, but good horse experience

• Private clinics allow you more hands on experience sometimes because vet school clinic is bureaucratic and are not technically supposed to do a lot of things
