  • Graduate Students Win APA Prizes
    Graduate Students Tom Harter and Jeppe Von Platz both won the 2006 American Philosophical Association, Central Division, Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Prize.  Congratulations Tom and Jeppe!

  • Mendez Wins the Undergraduate Essay Contest
    The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce that the winner of the Mark and Inge Moore Undergraduate Philosophy Essay Contest for 2006 is Owen Mendez. Mr. Mendez’s essay was entitled “Action, Freedom and the Categorical Imperative.”

  • Spring Ethics Conference
    The Philosophy Department and CAPE hosted a major applied ethics conference April 6 - 8, 2006 with the support of a diverse group of academic units at UT.  The title of the conference is "Ethics and the Business of Biomedicine."

  • Riker Wins Graduate Teaching Award
    Walter Riker was awarded the Philosophy Department's Graduate Teaching Associate Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2004-2005 academic year. Congratulations Walter!

  • Johnson Conducts Research at Oak Ridge
    In 2005 graduate student Todd Johnson served as a Summer Research Fellow at the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies, at the campus of Oak Ridge National Laboratoryhere in East Tennessee. Todd’s primary research project resulted in the report “Securing the Promises of Nanotechnology: A Survey of International Initiatives, Interests, and Ideologies.” The purpose of the project was to gain a better understanding of the state of nanotechnology and nanoscience across the globe. This initial research will serve as the basis for future normative work on the ethical, social, legal, and environmental implications of nanotechnology and nanoscience.

  • Cohen Retires
    After 35 years of incomparable service to the Department of Philosophy and the University of Tennessee , Dr. Sheldon Cohen retired at the end of the 2004-05 academic year. The department will be searching for an ancient and medieval philosophy scholar during 2005-06 to take up the vacant tenure-line position.

  • New Faculty Hires
    The Philosophy Department is pleased to announce the appointment of three new lecturers to the department faculty. Mathew Lu ( Ph.D. Cornell University, 2005) and Vaughn Huckfeldt ( Ph.D. Johns Hopkins University , 2005) will be teaching undergraduate courses in value theory. John Kress (Ph. D. Vanderbilt University, 1998) will be teaching undergraduate courses in ancient and medieval philosophy. Previously, Kress taught at St. John's College from 1998 to 2005. All three will be joining the department in Fall 2005.

  • Reidy Wins Berger Prize
    Assistant Professor David Reidy's essay "Hate Crimes, Oppression and Legal Theory" in Public Affairs Quarterly has been awarded the American Philosophical Association's 2005 Berger Prize in Philosophy of Law. The prize is awarded by the Committee on Philosophy of Law to the best nominated essay published in 2002-2003. The paper will be featured at a special symposium at the APA Pacific Division Meeting next spring.

  • Arnold Wins “Best Paper” Award
    Assistant Professor Denis Arnold received the award for Best Paper at the 2004 Society for Business Ethics (SBE) Annual Meeting held in New Orleans. The award winning paper is titled “Beyond Sweatshops: Positive Deviancy and Global Labor Practices” and is co-authored with Laura Hartman (Associate Vice President, DePaul University). SBE is the main professional organization of North American scholars engaged in the academic study of business ethics.

  • Undergraduate Awards
    Paul Julian and Nicholas Barber are the duo first place winners of the 2004 Mark and Inge Moore Undergraduate Philosophy Essay contest.  Congratulations Paul  and Nicholas! In addition, the Department is pleased to announce that Paul Julian was awarded the Louise Carr-McClure Scholarship and Jeremy Cox was awarded the Bacon-Beard Scholarship.
