- Betsy Postow, In Memoriam
The Department is saddened to announce that Dr. Besty Postow passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on the morning of Friday, June 22. A tribute to Betsy is available here. Betsy's Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 15th at Tennessee Valley Unitarian-Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, at 2 p.m. Following the service there will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
- Reidy Book Recognized
David Reidy's co-edited book "Rawls's Law of Peoples: A Realistic Utopia?" (Blackwell, 2006) was selected by "Choice" and "Outstanding Academic Title" for 2006.
- Douglas Wins Interdisciplinary Studies Award
Assistant Professor Heather Douglas received a faculty award for outstanding contributions to interdisciplinary scholarship. Dr. Douglas received the University Studies Annual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Interdisciplinary Scholarship. Dr. Douglas, whose specialty is Philosophy of Science, is the Convener of the Interdisciplinary Colloquy on the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology (HIPSTERS).
- Nash Receives Teaching Excellence Award
Doctoral Student Woods Nash was awarded the Philosophy Department's Graduate Teaching Associate Excellence in Teaching Award for the 2006-2007 year. Congratulations Woods!
- Leutwiler Receives Scholarships
Junior Philosophy major Evan Leutwiler received both the $3,000 Bacon-Beard Undergraduate Scholarship and the $3,000 Louise-Carr McClure Scholarship for the 2007-2008 academic year. Congratulations Evan!
- Undergraduate Essay Contest Winners Announced
First Prize in the 2007 Undergraduate Essay Competition, including a cash prize of $350, was awarded to Aaron McClalin for "Authenticity in Kierkegaard." Second Prize and $150 was awarded to Heidi Bloom for "The Benefits of Atheism in an Absurd Existence." Congratulations Aaron and Heidi.
- Arnold Receives SARIF Research Grant
Associate Professor and CAPE Director Denis Arnold received a Scholarly Activities Research Incentive Fund (SARIF) Summer Graduate Research Assistantships from the Office of the Chancellor. The grant will cover a three month salary for doctoral student Jason Hubbard who will work as Arnold 's research assistant on the ethics of global labor practices and the ethics of pharmaceutical company marketing during the summer of 2007.
- Riker to Vanderbilt
Walter Riker, a 2006 Ph.D., has accepted a full-time, visiting appointment in the Philosophy Department at Vanderbilt University where he will teach introductory philosophy, logic, and political philosophy. Congratulations Walter!
- Bustos Publishes in The Journal of Value Inquiry and has APA Eastern Division Paper Accepted
Doctoral student Keith Bustos has had his paper “Defending a Kantian Conception of Duties to Self and Others” accepted for publication by The Journal of Value Inquiry. Bustos also had his colloquium paper "Corporate Environmental Responsibility: A Kantian Approach" accepted for the 2007 American Philosophical Association, Easter Division Meeting.
- Riker Publishes in Political Studies
Walter Riker, a 2006 Ph.D., has had his paper “The Democratic Peace Thesis is Not Democratic: On Behalf of Rawls’s Decent Peoples” accepted for publication by Political Studies.
- Kenehan Wins Fellowship
Philosophy graduate student Sarah Kenehan won a generous, two-year dissertation fellowship from the government of Switzerland to complete her doctoral research on international justice issues raised by global climate change while working with the major European center on global climate change at the University of Bern, Switzerland.
- Bustos Receives ISSE Dissertation Fellowhip
Philosophy graduate student Keith Bustos has been selected to receive the 2007-2008 ISSE doctoral fellowship stipend. The Institute for a Secure and Sustainable Environment (ISSE) is a University of Tennessee organization that aims to promote the development of policies, technologies, and educational programs that respond to pressing environmental issues facing the state, the nation, and the globe. Keith’s dissertation focuses on developing a Kantian Environmental Ethic that is applicable to citizens, consumers, business persons, and policy makers. - Kabasensche to Washington State
Bill Kabasensche, a 2006 Ph.D., has accepted a tenure-track appointment in bioethics in the Philosophy Department at Washington State University. Bill is currently finishing up a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia. Congratulations Bill!
- Undergraduate Essay Contest Announced !
We are pleased to announce the 2007 Mark and Inge Moore Undergraduate Philosophy Essay Contest. The Contest is open to all undergraduate students enrolled at UT. Essays on any philosophical topic are eligible for entry. Entries must be submitted to the Philosophy Department Secretary no later than 4:30pm on March 30th. $250 for 1st Prize, $150 for 2nd Prize, and $100 for 3rd Prize. - Undergraduate Scholarships Announced !
We are pleased to announce the Bacon-Beard Scholarship and the Louise Carr-McClure Scholarship. Applicants must be currently enrolled UT students in the Humanities of the College of Arts & Sciences and be in their Junior or Senior year. - Faculty Searches
The Department is delighted to report that we have successfully recruited our first choice candidate in both of our searches this year. We are very pleased that Clerk Shaw, an talented ancient philosopher from Washington University, and E.J. Coffman, a talented epistemologist from Notre Dame, will be joining the department. - Grad Student Wins APA Prize
Graduate Student Tom Harter won the 2007 American Philosophical Association, Central Division, Outstanding Graduate Student Paper Prize. This is the second year in a row that Tom has had a paper accepted to the APA Central Division and won this prize. Congratulations Tom!
