Klatsches
During most weeks of the fall and spring semesters, faculty and interested students (undergraduate and graduate) gather together at a "klatsch." A member of the department, faculty or graduate student, and sometimes a faculty member from another department on campus gives a paper or talk. The paper or talk is typically a work-in-progress and the presenter's goal is to test his or her ideas, arguments, and insights with the audience. There is usually a 30- to 40-minute question-and-answer period during which the topic is debated, the insights expanded, and the arguments challenged. Afterwards, participants often decide to adjourn to a more congenial setting, such as a nearby restaurant, to continue their discussions.
