General Approach |
The general approach is that students will explore frequently asked questions about voting in Tennessee. Then, students will participate in a voting simulation. |

1. Explain to students that they will
take on the new role of a voting citizen very soon.
2. Direct students to Frequently Asked Questions about Voting in Tennessee. 3. Instruct students to explore all the FAQ's. By viewing this web page, students should become familiar with how to register to vote, registration by mail, absentee voting, etc. 4. When students finish exploring the FAQ's about voting in Tennessee, divide the class into diverse cooperative learning groups. 5. Assign each group to read and learn about one or more items from the voter's pamphlet (examples: candidates, state measures, local issues). Each group will make a short oral presentation to the class on their item(s). 6. Have students fill out and turn in a voter registration card to obtain eligibility to vote. 7. Alphabetically list names and addresses in a poll book. 8. Make up a booklet to be used with the punch cards in the voting booth. 9. On the "Election Day," assign the students the same jobs that are completed by the precinct volunteers. 10. After the election is complete, tally and record the results. 11. Post and discuss the results. 12. For homework, have students write a one page paper about the importance of voting in Tennessee. |

This activity may take two 60 minute sessions with students and several days of preparation for the election. |
