Let's Work Alone and Together!!

Standards

Learning Expectations
This activity will help students acuire competencies which relate to the following standards:
1.0 Skills for academic self confidence, learning, and success.
The student will:
1.4 Demonstrate taking responsibility for schoolwork.
1.5 Demonstrate working both independently and cooperatively.

General Approach
The general approach is that students will practice doing schoolwork independently and then will do schoolwork cooperatively.  This will be followed by a counselor led discussion.

Activity Steps
  • Give students worksheet relative to grade level and current subject matter.
  • Have students complete worksheet independently.
  • Have students divided into small groups of three and have students complete same worksheet cooperatively.
Lead students through a discussion:

Working by ourselves and working with others can be different.  We may have to do different things to get the work done.  Let's talk about those difference.

Use the following "leads" and wait for their response:

  • What skills do we have to use when we work by ourselves? (being quiet, not helping others, etc)
  • What skills do we have to use when we work with others? (listening, taking turns, etc)
  • How does it feel to work by ourselves? with others?
The counselor can list these skills on the board for more discussion and reminders.  The counselor can identify those in the room who are appropriately demonstrating working independently and cooperatively.

Time required
This activity may require two 30-40 minute sessions.  The first session may be used for completing worksheets and the second session may be used for discussion.

Resources Needed
  • Worksheets appropriate for grade level and subject matter.  The counselor may want to consult with the classroom teacher for this.
