General Approach

Students will work in teams of two to discoverwhat other class member's relatives do. This scavenger hunt will be completedwith the assistance of a worksheet and the participation of teams in arestricted time frame.


Activity Steps

  • Explain the purpose of this career explorationhunt: to learn about "who does what" in our community.
  • Explain the activity: 
    • The students will first divide up into teams oftwo; teams of three will also work.
    • The teams will be competing against each other,in a hunt, to find and fill in the most occupation blanks on their worksheet.
    • The teams should choose one person to write.
    • The teams will have ten minutes to move aboutthe room asking other class members's to help them fill in the blanks.
    • The students must follow the class room rulessuch as no running, keep their body parts to themselves, etc.
  • Pass out the worksheets, give the students a momentto look them over, and tell the students of one rule: Each relative canonly be used two times on the list.
  • After the ten minutes is up, or most of the teamshave completed 3/4ths of the worksheet, call time. (an open discussionwill follow led by the counsleor)
  • Have the teams take a seat for the discussion.
  • Discuss who's name is on each blank, what theydo, and where they work.
    • Ask the group, as well as the individual of therelative, about this person......how they got this job, did they go toschool for it, do they enjoy it.
    • Discuss the importance of each occupation, whatrole they play in our community, and what would happen without this occupation.
  • The teams with the most blanks will be rewardedat the end. (Candy is one suggestion of a prize to use.)

 


Time Required

This activity should require 30-45 minutes,depending on the size of the group and length of the discussion.
