This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standard: 
7.0  Acquire Self Knowledge and Interpersonal Skills
The student will:
7.5  demonstrate effective communication skills.

General 
Approach
This activity will guide students through writing business letters to prospective employers. The students will also write their own resume'.

Activity Steps
1. Review the parts of a business letter. 

2. Have students draft one letter each of the following

a. Cover letter for a resume’ 
b. Follow-up letter thanking for an interview 
c. Follow-up letter accepting a job 
d. Follow-up letter turning down a job
3. The students will also create a resume’ based on their own experiences and education. They will be required as a homework assignment to find the names, addresses and phone numbers of three people who could be their references.

4. On the second day, the students will type on a word processor their résumés and their four letters.
 


Time Required
This activity will take 2- 60 minute session including a homework assignment on the first night.

Performance
Indicators
The students will be graded based on their proper form of the business letter as well as the type of letter they are writing.
