This activity will help students acquire competencies which relate to the following standards:

   7.  Acquire Self Knowledge and Interpersonal Skills
   9.  Acquire Personal Safety Skills

The student will:

   7.1  Develop personal skills that lead to effective, efficient, and 
          productive life choices
   9.4  Utilize skills to recognize, report, and protect against threats to 
          personal safety
 


General Approach
The general approach is that students, in groups, will be given real life personal health and safety issues in which they must use a decision making model to reach a solution.

Activity Steps
1.  Put students into groups.
2.  Print an "Issues" worksheet for each group.
3.  Assign each group an issue.
4.  Assist groups in following the decision making model.
     a. Groups define the problem.
     b. Groups identify alternatives to the problem.  All possible ideas 
         should be listed.
     c. Groups study the alternatives.  Groups may use the internet to 
         find information about possible solutions.
     d. Groups use decision aids such as judgment, discussions, evaluation
         of the effects of possible solutions, scenario/role playing.
     e. Groups should select the solution they think is best.
     f. Groups should decide what is necessary to carry out their idea.
     g. Groups should present their problem/issue, solution, and idea for 
         implementation to the class.
     h. Students write about the decision making process in a journal.

Time Required
This activity may require 45-60 minutes to complete.
