General Approach

The general approach is that the students will use the internet to explore the tasks of certain occupations.

Activity Steps

1) The instructor will introduce the activity by holding up a common product such as a book.  The instructor will then start a dialog with the students that goes something like:

"Books are something that we use everyday here at school, but I doubt that I am the first person to have touched this book.  Take a minute to think about all of the people this book has seen  that have made it possible for me to sit down and read it."

2)  Have the students tell the instructor who they think have touched the book. Most likely they will say writers, editors, publishers, etc...  Write the names of these occupations on the board.

3)  Have the students split up into teams of two.  Assign each team one of these occupations.

4)  Under close supervision, allow the students to research their occupation on the internet.

5)  Have the students fill out a worksheet asking questions about their occupation. (Also included on the worksheet will be the URLs of some helpful sites.

6)  Allow the students to share their findings with the rest of the class.

**After the students' short presentations, emphasize the fact that if there was no one to do even one of these jobs than we would be unable to have the book in our classroom, thus each of the occupations are equally important!!

Time required

This activity will take about 10 minutes for the instructor to introduce, 20-25 minutes for the students to research, and 10-15 minutes for presentations.  Total = 40-50 minutes.

Resources Needed

1)  A book or some other common product for demonstration purposes.
2)  Access to the internet.
3)  A worksheet for the students to fill out.
